Encourage a Child's Reading by Beginning With Pictures

Pictures allow children an idea of what is happening in a story. Words can sometimes feel scary but for a child who is an emerging reader, the pictures are the story. Pictures allow the child to begin following and analyzing a story. Using pictures, children can practice language to orally story tell their idea of the story based on the images in it. When children are beginning to read try not to look at it as a wrong or right way. It is all part of the process. The goal is for children to be excited about reading. Positivity and patience from caregivers and teachers can allow children more willingness to engage.
