The Importance of Reading

Reading can be used and developed for a variety of purposes. It is acknowledged by pediatricians, caregivers and teachers alike that reading has a special place in a child's learning and development.  There are countless benefits to reading. Here are just a few examples:

Allows for Bonding Moments With Caregivers and Teachers

Reading with a child can be a great way to give one on one quality time. We can bond with children even if it's not one on one though. The way we use ourselves to interact with the child and the book can allow for connections to be built.

Promotes Cognitive and Language Development

Through reading, we introduce and discuss new concepts. Young children have growing brains, the more we can provide, the more they can gain.

Expands Vocabulary

Children that read often learn more words and have a more advanced vocabulary. Read and explore new books daily to help expand a child's vocabulary.

Better Communication Skills

With a larger vocabulary, students can use these words in action to communicate with others. Communication is a valuable tool, students can also learn in different ways to communicate. Think of a story, if a caregiver or teacher uses different voices or emphasis on characters and events in the story students can observe different ways to read out loud and communicate ideas.

Learn About Diversity and Different Ways of Doing and Thinking

Books can teach us about things we are unfamiliar with, or do not experience in our day to day lives. Books can be a great way to visit new topics, even familiarize ourselves with other cultures in a fun and engaging way. Help build build connections between different texts and our preexisting knowledge.
