Indigenous Circle of Courage and Ties to Reading
There are four main components of the circle of courage: belonging, mastery, generosity, and independence. I will discuss what each are and how they can be related to reading.
Belonging:
The spirit of belonging is where an individual feels like they belong. You can support a child's feeling of belonging by reading with them or with a group of them together. We feel like we belong when someone takes the time to to read. Sitting beside a child and allowing them to feel comfortable an interact with a story can support this feeling.
Mastery:
The spirit of mastery comes over time. It takes practice and hard work. Learning to read can at times feel difficult. It takes time and practice but it can also be fun. When we practice reading, once a child feels like they have mastered a reading level they feel accomplished.
Generosity:
The spirit of generosity is when we give to others. We can give to children when we share our knowledge. When we read out loud, we model reading to others. Taking the time to be generous and give time and knowledge to children teaches them generosity.
Independence:
The spirit of independence comes once the other spirits can be accomplished. Belonging gives us the support to learn, mastery comes over time and practice, generosity is the people that give there time to share and support other's learning. Independence is when a reader can do it on their own with confidence. This is when children become a fluent readers.
